Anchorage Office Participates in 2014 Shoebox Program

December 05, 2014

Anchorage Home Builders Association (AHBA) organizes a “Shoebox” program every year.

They deliver 660+ backpacks (originally shoeboxes) filled with gifts for needy children to 30 Anchorage area elementary schools before winter break. Each backpack came with a tag with the child’s first name, last initial, age, and gender. There are a few simple rules, such as: gifts should not represent violent or religious activities. It is an anonymous program. This year we had a cumulative twenty three backpacks sponsored by Michael Baker International and Anchorage office employees. The gifts varied from legos, blankets, gloves and beanies, coloring books, silly putty, board games, a variety of self-building kits, arts and craft supplies, puzzles, and candy. Several employees dedicated their “lunch hour” on December 4th to wrap presents. The backpacks were decorated with charms, ribbons, and bows. We are looking forward to participating in next year’s program and hope for even more backpack sponsors! Lastly, a Huge thanks to everyone who participated, we have a very creative group here in Anchorage!
