The Alexandria, VA office participated in Canstruction 2014 at the National Building Museum in Washington, DC for the second year in a row.
This year’s theme was “Play With Your Food”. Michael Baker competed with 27 other architecture, design, construction and engineering firms to build structures out of cans that will be donated to the Capital Area Food Bank in Washington, DC.
Chris von Speigelfeld, Chief Digital Officer of the Capital Area Food Bank, said, “Canstruction not only provides nutritious food at a time of year when donations are low, but also raises awareness about hunger in Washington, DC. We have to call in volunteers from our reserves just to sort and pack the massive donation from Canstruction.” Last year, Canstruction teams donated about 56,000 pounds of food and an additional $8,000 from People’s Choice votes. The donations were the equivalent of about 42,000 meals.
