Michael Baker International recently sponsored and participated in the first annual “5K On the Runway” at the Brookley Field Aeroplex in Mobile, AL to raise funds for the renovation of a local park that serves a distressed community and three neighboring schools.

Hosted by the Mobile Airport Authority Foundation and AIRBUS – the newest tenant of the airfield – the event consisted of a one mile fun run, a 5K run on Runway 14-32, and a post-race party featuring live music, food/drinks, and activities for the whole family.

Over 1000 runners/walkers participated in the 5k, making this inaugural event an overwhelming success.  Staff from Michael Baker’s Mobile, AL and Ocean Springs, MS offices hosted a corporate tent throughout the day’s events, complete with prizes for all participating runners.   All net proceeds from the first annual “5K On The Runway” (over $80,000 to date) will go to spearhead needed renovations at Doyle Park.

Doyle Park is a 24-acre City of Mobile community park, located adjacent to the Brookley Aeroplex.  Planned improvements for the $1.4M renovation include an aviation-themed playground, splash pad, soccer/football fields, event pavilions, a fitness trail, and an observation area for aviation-enthusiasts to watch airplanes take-off and land at Brookley Field.
