Brian Russell (vice president and office executive in Michael Baker International’s Jacksonville, Fla., office) recently was honored with the Department of Defense Patriot Award for Michael Baker’s exceptional support of team members' National Guard or Reserve service. The award was presented to Brian by the Florida Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) at the 4th Annual CSX Patriot Awards Breakfast.

The award is given to employers who go above and beyond to support team members through a wide-range of measures including flexible schedules, time off prior to and after deployment, caring for families, and granting leaves of absence if needed.

Brian and Michael Baker were nominated for the award by Aaron McDaniel (Aviation Project Manager at Michael Baker). McDaniel joined Michael Baker in 2008 and serves in the National Guard. He was deployed to Iraq for a year in 2009 and went on a three-year tour with the Florida National Guard in 2012.

“Brian and Michael Baker have been incredibly supportive of my service and have encouraged my career since I started at the company,” said Aaron. “They have been understanding of my longer deployments, traditional drills, annual training events and more, while allowing me to feel secure in my job and providing me with growth opportunities throughout my career. They are truly an exemplary employer and should be recognized at the highest level.”

ESGR, a Department of Defense program, seeks to foster a culture in which all employers support and value the employment and military service of members of the National Guard and Reserve in the United States.
