Michael Baker International Team in Florida Earns Recognition from Local APWA Branch

March 14, 2017

Firm Recognized with Project of the Year Award

The Michael Baker International team in Tampa, Fla., was recently recognized by the Florida West Coast Branch of the American Public Works Association (APWA) for its innovative work on a local transportation project that showcased how the firm makes a difference in the community.

The Michael Baker team and partner City of Indian Rocks Beach were presented with Project of the Year award for the Walsingham Road and Gulf Boulevard Intersection Improvement project.
The lane diet exiting the intersection eastbound sends the message to the driver to travel at a safe speed. This also provides more space in the right of way to improve bicycle and pedestrian facilities. High emphasis cross-walks were added at side streets on Walsingham Road. The beach view and horizon can be seen in the distance.
Michael Baker partnered with City of Indian Rocks Beach to provide engineering, design and construction services as part of a complete streets initiative. The project aimed to improve pedestrian safety and beautify the signature intersection at SR 699 (Gulf Boulevard) and SR 699 (Walsingham Road/5th Avenue).
Based on community input, Michael Baker designed a layout of the intersection that shortened the crosswalk distances, restricted the free-flow turn lanes, and provided a dramatic focal point for motorists and pedestrians. The Michael Baker team also managed the construction of this complete streets intersection improvement project and provided the City and municipal stakeholders with progress reports during construction to assist in receiving state funding.
