The Michael Baker team in Florida was recently recognized by the Florida Institute of Consulting Engineers (FICE) during its annual Outstanding Project Awards program. Michael Baker’s work on the SR 30 (US98) SPUI at Cody Avenue Hurlburt Field Entrance
included the design of a 191‐foot, 96‐inch deep, single‐span pre-stressed concrete girder bridge. It is the longest pre‐tensioned concrete girder ever designed by Michael Baker, and the longest SPUI‐bridge in Florida, at the time, to be constructed from a single‐span, pre‐tensioned concrete girder. Additional features include exit and entrance ramps to the intersection, linear stormwater retention areas and roadway lighting.
The Cody Avenue Hurlburt Field is home to the U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command and located in Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT) District 3. This project helped to increase safety and convenience for the thousands of military members, business owners, residents and visitors who travel through the area each day.
The Michael Baker project team included Chuck Carswell, P.E. (Highway Design Engineer) as Consultant Project Manager and Michael Schwier, P.E. (Tallahassee Office Executive) as Principal-in-Charge.
Each year, FICE recognizes achievement by its member firms in accomplishing Florida transportation projects. Firms are nominated for awards in seven project award categories, including Outstanding Major Project, Outstanding Design-Build or CM at Risk Project, Outstanding Roadway Project, Outstanding Bridge Project, Outstanding PD&E / Planning Project, Outstanding Environmental Project and Outstanding Special Project. Entries are judged by the FICE Outstanding Projects Awards Committee, which is comprised of representatives from FICE and FDOT.
