Michael Baker provided planning and architectural and interior design for the 20,000-square-foot general aviation terminal building at the airport. Michael Baker’s services included site planning and schematics, architecture, and interior design.
Completed in 2008, this county-owned, public-use, general aviation airport is located on S.R. 278 (Rockmart Highway), approximately 25 miles from the nearest interstate and 40 miles from midtown Atlanta. The airport features a 20,000-square-foot terminal building, which was opened in May 2010, and one 5,505-foot-long by 100-foot-wide concrete–paved runway, designated Runway 13-31. Aircraft operations average 27 per day, 95 percent general aviation and five percent military.
The terminal building consists of four work centers; general aviation operations, a restaurant, community development offices and lease space, and a community meeting room and council chamber, totaling approximately 20,000 square feet. The exterior aesthetic is a "transitional" modern appearance, which includes broad overhangs with deep shadows, a warm handcrafted textured brick, and large expanses of glazing. The exterior features a deep "front porch," arched brick entry, and cupola.
