Seattle's King Street Coach Yard is responsible for maintaining Amtrak's eighth busiest passenger rail route. When the Coach Yard needed to upgrade its facilities, a successful partnership among Amtrak, an architecture firm, a construction contractor, and Michael Baker International’s construction management team was able to deliver the new facilities quickly, and without disruption to operations. The design-build delivery of track improvements, a new train maintenance facility, and a new warehouse, administration, and health and welfare building at the Seattle King Street Coach Yard was completed months ahead of schedule, safely, and $10 million below budget. Michael Baker provided construction management services to support the design-build of the new Cascades maintenance facility and a new warehouse and administration and health welfare building at the Seattle King Street Coach Yard. Michael Baker’s pre-construction services included constructability reviews, schedule and staging plan reviews, and document control. Construction-phase services included construction inspection and testing, submittal management, budget monitoring, including cost-control and change-order minimization, as-built drawing review, quality assurance and quality control, management of on-site safety programs, and record keeping.
