Norfolk Southern Bellevue Classification Yard

Location: Bellevue, OH

Norfolk Southern (NS) performed a $160 million project to double the capacity of its Bellevue Rail Yard in order to meet rising demand for freight rail transportation. An additional 38 classification tracks were added, and a hump bridge was constructed. The project also added a south bypass track; constructed additional receiving and forwarding tracks; and paved existing and constructed new access roads, parking lots, retaining walls, and a secondary access tunnel. Michael Baker provided engineering, surveying, design, and permitting services for the project. The key challenge for this project was to provide “fast track” design and permitting. It was critical for Michael Baker to be proactive in developing the project schedule and to anticipate and resolve key choke points in advance, including all necessary permits and property acquisitions. Michael Baker’s leadership helped navigate these complex issues while allowing the project to be completed on-time and on-budget.
