Michael Baker provided design services to the City of Irvine for the Sand Canyon Avenue Underpass at SCRRA/OCTA/Metrolink Grade Separation. Michael Baker was responsible for roadway layout, structures design, pump station design, railroad permitting and coordination, railroad shoofly design, drainage design, utility relocation coordination, survey/right-of-way engineering, community outreach, landscape/irrigation, identification of funding and geotechnical engineering services. There were a number of project challenges and key issues that required resolution including the development of a complex construction staging in order to maintain rail, vehicle, pedestrian and bicycle traffic. Utilities also presented a challenge to the design team as there were major relocations required of oil, gas, electric, fiberoptic, telephone, communication, storm drain, water, and sewer. Michael Baker’s attention to detail in this complex, tightly constrained environment allowed the construction of the project to proceed on-schedule and without any unanticipated conflicts.
