Rehabilitation of Four Ohio Department of Natural Resources Dams

Location: Ohio

Michael Baker International was responsible to bring four (4) dams owned by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) into compliance with the current ODNR Dam Safety regulations. Hydrology and hydraulic evaluations, geotechnical investigations, and structural assessments were conducted for three of the dams, while an emergency replacement of the outlet pipe was required for the fourth dam (Lake Alma). Of the three dams requiring full rehabilitation, two were earthen dams requiring overtopping protection and spillway replacements. The third dam (Roosevelt Lake) was concrete and required post-tension anchoring to stabilize the dam. Overtopping protection was provided through the use of Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) and the replacement of the spillway given the results of the structural assessment and geotechnical investigations. Improvements to the seepage collection and replacement of outlet works were incorporated for the dams. Michael Baker International held joint review meetings with ODNR Dam Safety, ODNR Parks and Recreation and ODNR Division of Engineering, which achieved buy-in during the design process and expedited the review and approval process. ODNR has accepted the Final Design Plans for Lake Alma which will be going into construction in 2013. Preliminary Design Reports for the other three dams have been accepted by ODNR and Michael Baker International will be completing the final design effort for those in 2013. Michael Baker International will provide construction management oversight in 2013 and 2014 to ensure construction is conducted in accordance with drawings and specifications.
