Location: O’Hare International Airport
As a key member of O'Hare Runway Designers, LLC (ORD LLC), which facilitated the City of Chicago's O'Hare Modernization Program, Michael Baker International was entrusted as the Lead Engineer for the design of O’Hare’s first new runway in 37 years. We successfully managed all technical coordination aspects of the North Airfield improvements, including runway site preparation, paving, lighting and signage, and FAA NAVAID Systems. We also provided bid and oversight services supporting the runway construction. Seventy-five hundred feet long, the new Group V runway was designed and built for full Category II/III approach capabilities and has been a critical component in improving efficiency and increasing capacity at ORD by providing a triple-approach runway for air traffic.
Runway 9L-27R was commissioned on time and under budget, and was the first signature project to become a testing ground for implementation of the sustainable initiatives found in the new Sustainable Airports Manual. Created by the Chicago Department of Aviation, it now is the standard for green initiatives at airports worldwide.
Reflective of our commitment to the health of the local environment, early efforts included use of low-sulfur diesel for all construction vehicles, low VOC construction material, balancing of earthwork across the airport and recycling of demolished construction debris.
