Irvine, Calif. (May 17, 2016)Michael Baker International, a global leader in engineering, planning and consulting services, recently partnered with TG Engineers to provide the Guam Waterworks Authority (GWA) with a reliable water source for the 160,000 residents on the 202-square-mile island. The team won a $2.3-million contract to design and replace five existing steel water reservoirs with new concrete reservoirs and pump stations in the northern and southern Guam systems. As part of the project, Michael Baker will perform structural support, hydraulic modeling, computational fluid dynamic modeling and instrumentation.

Michael Baker engineers designed pre-stressed concrete reservoirs that can withstand high seismicity, extreme weather and severe typhoon winds that the island endures based on its location on the western edge of the Pacific Plate. The new reservoirs range in size from one- to two-million gallons and improve GWA’s capacity to provide a reliable potable water supply for the northern and southern regions of Guam.

“Frequent exposure to nature’s most destructive forces, including earthquakes and typhoons, caused the current water supply system in Guam to deteriorate, increasing the risk of damage to the steel reservoirs and heightening the potential for water contamination,” said Sal Sheikh, project manager at Michael Baker International. “Michael Baker’s extensive experience designing reliable water tanks afforded us the opportunity to create a solution that ensures reliable drinking water is available in Guam and demonstrates that ‘We Make a Difference’ in the lives of thousands who need it the most.”

Michael Baker was selected based on the company’s exceptional design capabilities using pre-stressed concrete reservoirs in similarly seismic-prone areas of California. In addition to the tank design, Michael Baker will also provide post-design construction support.

Michael Baker is currently designing the reservoirs for anticipated construction in 2017.
