Pittsburgh (June 7, 2016) - Michael Baker International, a global leader in engineering, planning and consulting services, announced that the Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS) recently recognized Kirsten Bowen, P.E., associate vice president, as the 2016 WTS Member of the Year for her commitment to the growth of WTS and the advancement of women in the transportation industry. The award was presented during the WTS Annual Conference in Austin, Texas.

More than 60 Michael Baker employees are active members of 19 WTS chapters, with eight employees serving in leadership roles. As a WTS corporate partner, Michael Baker promotes career advancement activities that support the WTS mission to help women find opportunity and recognition in the global transportation industry.

“Kirsten has been integral in building a network of Michael Baker professionals who are actively engaged in WTS and we are proud that her efforts are being recognized,” said John Dietrick, national practice lead for Michael Baker’s Bridge and Highway practice. “From managing large-scale transportation projects to tirelessly working to advance the WTS mission to build lifelong careers for women in the global transportation industry, Kirsten exemplifies what it means to be a leader.”

Based in Cleveland, Bowen was instrumental in building the WTS Northeast Ohio chapter from the ground up. She recruited the required number of members to join and volunteered to serve as president to focus on the growth of the chapter, from 20 initial members to 65 current members. Bowen also supports the WTS regionally and nationally. She currently serves as the Central Region Council Chair where she helps to foster relationships between chapters within the region. In this capacity, she has helped to coordinate two successful regional conferences.  She is also an active member of the WTS Advisory Board.

“It’s been incredibly rewarding to support the WTS mission to create opportunities for women and men to work together and benefit each other in their careers,” said Bowen. “Developing and participating in professional programs and networking with industry and government leaders through the WTS has enhanced my career and I will continue to do my part to create those same opportunities for members in the Central region.”

As associate vice president in Michael Baker’s national Bridge and Highway practice, Bowen provides oversight, direction and quality assurance on transportation projects nationwide, from short subdivision roads to major interstates and railyards.
