Michael Baker served as the designer for this project, which completely replaced a critical bridge structure in the heart of Atlanta to safely handle larger traffic volumes and heavier vehicles. The design-build team developed a plan that cut down construction time from two years to just five months using innovative accelerated bridge construction techniques.
A phased design plan separated the project into Foundations, Substructure, Beams and Superstructure, allowing design, review, approval and fabrication to move quickly. This allowed construction on the critical path foundations beneath the existing bridge to begin even while the old bridge deck still carried live traffic.
