Michael Baker’s work on the Nexton Parkway Interchange in Berkeley County, S.C., was recognized by ACEC with a National Recognition Award.
The growing south region of South Carolina needed a solution to allow for more traffic flow and easier interconnectivity among the cities. Michael Baker, along with Berkeley County and the South Carolina Department of Transportation, delivered the Nexton Parkway Interchange. The project consisted of constructing a new interchange on I-26 and widening the parkway from four to six lanes. The new parkway will create a critical new transportation network for the region to help residents of the rapidly growing area commute to and from work. Our South Carolina team provided engineering, design, permitting and right-of-way acquisition services.
Michael Baker prepared the environmental assessment, developed right-of-way and final roadway and bridge construction plans, obtained all necessary construction permits, acquired the right-of-way, performed the utility coordination and provided bidding support and construction administration for the widening of Interstate 26 from four to six lanes just west of the Nexton Parkway Interchange and for the construction of a new interchange with associated frontage roads at the Nexton Parkway totaling approximately 10 miles of new or improved roads.
To date, the Nexton Parkway Interchange project has received the following recognition:
