Harrisburg, Pa. (April 26, 2016)Michael Baker International, a global leader in engineering, planning and consulting services, is helping to fight hunger one can at a time with support for an important cause in Central Pennsylvania. Employees from the company’s Harrisburg, Pa., office participated in the Canstruction of Central PA 2016 competition, part of a national effort to raise awareness of the ongoing problem of hunger around the world.

Competitors from local organizations, schools and design groups stacked canned goods in inventive ways at the Capital City Mall in Camp Hill, Pa., on April 22. Michael Baker’s team won the Jurors’ Favorite award for their entry.

“Michael Baker’s involvement in this fun and meaningful competition is just another way that our team is making a difference in the community this year,” said Daniel Snyder, GIT associate at Michael Baker and coordinator of this year’s event. “We solve design challenges for clients every day, so this is a great opportunity for designers, engineers and other team members in the company to join together and tackle another design challenge for a good cause.”

The Michael Baker team’s design, titled “Torch of Dreams: Let your light shine bright and your cans stand tall!” honored the Special Olympics Pennsylvania’s 47th Annual Area M Games and was modeled after the Special Olympics torch. The 12-member team spent six hours creating the structure out of 2,640 cans of produce. This is the sixth consecutive year that Michael Baker has entered the regional competition.

Designs are on display for public viewing through Friday, April 29. Following the event, Canstruction will donate the canned goods to Project SHARE in Carlisle, Pa. Project SHARE then distributes the food to local food banks and pantries in the surrounding counties, where more than 160,000 Central Pennsylvanians access hunger relief programs.

During the past year, Michael Baker International has entered teams in regional Canstruction competitions in Irvine, California and Alexandria, Virginia. The company’s Pittsburgh office plans to enter the western Pennsylvania regional competition later this spring.

Recognized as an innovator in promoting global hunger relief, Canstruction hosts annual competitions and exhibit events in more than 150 cities around the world, which has led to the collection and donation of nearly 30 million pounds of food to the needy since 1992.
