Pittsburgh (August 16, 2016) - Michael Baker International, a global leader in engineering, planning and consulting services, is partnering with the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) to provide general engineering, construction management and inspection services to a host of SEPTA projects throughout Southeastern Pennsylvania. The company was recently awarded a three-year, $8-million contract to support SEPTA’s ongoing growth initiatives to improve the region’s infrastructure.
As part of the contract, the Michael Baker team will support SEPTA in their management of complex construction projects with the goal of ensuring quality, enhancing customer service, and avoiding delays, changes and claims. In addition, Michael Baker will supplement the in-house SEPTA project management staff, respond to emerging conditions and partner with SEPTA for cost-effective, safe and timely solutions in project delivery.
“It is our collaborative spirit and strategic growth that enables Michael Baker to provide SEPTA with the resources needed to execute the SEPTA’s Rebuilding the System program,” said Mark Alisesky, market lead for railroad and transit at Michael Baker International. “At Michael Baker, we believe in cross-office and cross-practice collaboration to achieve customer satisfaction, employee development, safety, infrastructure improvements and innovation. This approach has proven highly successful in our partnership with SEPTA.”
To bolster its ability to best serve the needs of SEPTA, Michael Baker heavily invested in its regional offices – located in Philadelphia, Horsham, Harrisburg and Allentown, Pennsylvania, and Hamilton, New Jersey – by committing to the strategic growth of its construction management and railroad and transit practices. Through the hiring and realignment of dedicated staff, both within Michael Baker offices and embedded in SEPTA staff, the company is well positioned to mobilize construction management and inspection staff quickly to meet SEPTA’s needs as part of the organization’s Rebuilding the System initiative.
Combining a blended transit system of legacy and modern stations, vehicles and infrastructure critical to the economy of the region, SEPTA has spent more than 50 years shaping a network to meet the travel needs of Southeastern Pennsylvania. Since 2013 with the passage of Pennsylvania Act 89, which created a long-term capital funding solution for critical highway and transit infrastructure needs across the Commonwealth, SEPTA has taken an aggressive business approach to managing its asset portfolio, by rehabilitating or replacing bridges, replacing critical power systems, and designing and procuring new vehicles. Out of this reinvestment in the system came the mantra Rebuilding the System, which places SEPTA in a strong position to reinvest in and rebuild the region’s transit system to provide safe, reliable service, while enhancing the travel experience for current and future customers.
Michael Baker previously worked on a number of SEPTA projects, including the Market Street Elevated Reconstruction, Crum Creek Viaduct Replacement, Stone Arch Bridges Rehabilitation and various other improvements. Additionally, the company has supported projects along the Keystone Corridor, for which SEPTA is a significant stakeholder.
