Pittsburgh (December 20, 2016) - In cooperation with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), Michael Baker International, a global leader in engineering, planning and consulting services, is playing a critical role in the improvement of Freedom Road, a major roadway that connects Cranberry Township and the northern suburbs of Pittsburgh, Interstate 79 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike to State Route 65 (SR 65) and also Beaver County. PennDOT recently awarded the company a $4.9 million contract to provide construction management and inspection services for phases one and two of the multi-year project.
As part of the contract, Michael Baker’s experts in construction management and inspection will ensure timely, efficient and safe delivery for the realignment and full reconstruction for portions of a three-mile stretch of Freedom Road, traveled by 4,567 commuters a day. The improvements will include structure replacement, significant stream relocation, drainage upgrades, guide rail installations, signage and pavement markings, traffic signal upgrades and the addition of a turning lane at SR 65.
“With the recent boom in economic development planned for Beaver County, the upgrades to Freedom Road will provide a more convenient, safer roadway for the projected 15,000 daily motorists who will travel this major Southwestern Pennsylvania corridor when the project is completed,” said Greg Cerminara, P.E., interim office executive for Michael Baker’s Pittsburgh office. “Michael Baker’s team looks forward to putting their expertise and innovative problem-solving to work as We Make a Difference through solutions that provide value now and over time for the region’s growing population.”
Construction is underway with completion anticipated in 2019.
