Louisville, Ky. (June 27, 2016) - Michael Baker International, a global leader in engineering, planning and consulting services, announced that the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) recently recognized Jason Stith, P.E., PhD, as the 2016 NSPE Young Engineer of the Year for his outstanding contributions to the industry and his community. Stith, a structural engineer in Michael Baker’s Louisville, Ky. office, accepted the award during the NSPE’s 2016 Professional Engineers Conference in Dallas.
The national recognition for Stith comes on the heels of his earlier acknowledgement as the Kentucky Society of Professional Engineers (KSPE) “Young Engineer of the Year.” Among those individuals honored throughout the NSPE’s regional chapters, Stith was selected as the national rising star for his tireless commitment to advancing the engineering industry.
In his five years at Michael Baker, Stith has been instrumental in a number of landmark bridge repair and construction projects throughout Kentucky. Most recently, he played a critical role in the design of twin 550-foot basket-handled network tied arch bridges at Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley in western Kentucky. Additionally, Stith had a prominent role in designing the critical replacement of the Eggner’s Ferry Bridge, which was completed in just four months after a 320-foot span was completely destroyed by a cargo ship. He also led the evaluation and development of the rehabilitation plans for the Sherman Minton Bridge after a critical crack was found during inspection, resulting in the closure of the structure that carries more than 80,000 vehicle per day on I-64 over the Ohio River.

In addition to his work at Michael Baker, Stith lends his engineering expertise to assist others. Recently, Stith volunteered with the Missionary Air Group, which supports humanitarian and relief operations in poor and remote areas around the globe, to help design a retrofit for a suspension bridge across a river in Honduras so locals could cross safely and access the area hospital. He also contributes to continuing education and certification programs for Kentucky engineers and serves as a mentor and frequent speaker at local schools.

Earlier this year, Stith was also recognized among his peers as a member of Engineering News-Record Midwest‘s “20 Under 40.”
