Pittsburgh (February 28, 2017) - Michael Baker International, a global leader in engineering, planning and consulting services, today announced the firm’s on-going support for National Park Service (NPS), Department of the Interior, environmental services. To date, 70 projects have been initiated and nearly 40 task orders are open and active as part of a 2014, five-year contract issued through the NPS’s Park Facility Management Division. It includes a General Services Administration (GSA) contract teaming arrangement between the contract lead and Michael Baker to provide environmental and safety management services for all seven regions of the NPS.

Michael Baker has been preserving and enhancing the visitor experience and conserving our national history, culture and habitats within our national parks since 2002. With this contract, Michael Baker is supporting program and park staff and regional environmental coordinators in the implementation of Environmental Management and Safety Programs. Services range from auditing and recommending design changes, operations and procedures, to the implementation of plans that detail the expansion of sustainable practices.

“Given the number of parks, Michael Baker develops solutions based on a case-by-case basis,” said Joe Rozum, Michael Baker Program/Client Manager and Technical/Environmental Compliance Manager. “Michael Baker also developed working relationships with park representatives to enhance the effectiveness of this program. We are honored to be endorsed and entrusted with preserving and protecting our country’s national parks as We Make a Difference for these national treasures and the nation’s citizens.”

Michael Baker is deploying new technologies to provide a broader spectrum of data that is vital to support the management of environmental sites. Incremental Sampling Methodology (ISM), which is a structured composite sampling and processing protocol for reducing data variability, provides an unbiased estimate of contaminant concentrations in sampled soil. The team also is implementing advanced methods for the application of in-situ remediation to treat soil that presents a threat to sensitive habitats by enriching specific soil populations and applying them back to the treatment area.

The contract was awarded in 2014. Completion of this contract is expected in 2020.
