2026 FIFA World Cup ITS Improvements Project Honored by ITE Transportation Award

Michael Baker International’s work on the New Jersey Department of Transportation’s (NJDOT) 2026 FIFA World Cup Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Improvements project was honored by the ITE Transportation Achievement Awards in the Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSMO) category.

In preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, NJDOT commissioned Michael Baker to perform a comprehensive ITS Operations Needs Assessment and Recommendations Study of the state’s principal urban arterials, freeways and expressways for the regional roadway network system surrounding the Meadowlands Sports Complex to identify the location and type of intelligent transportation infrastructure needed to maintain continuous traffic operation and management during the event.

The study focused on identifying and investigating the existing ITS coverage areas and coverage gaps along the corridors, as well as emerging transportation technologies that could be leveraged to assist NJDOT in managing transportation mobility during the 2026 World Cup.

It is anticipated that after the 2026 World Cup, these ITS improvements will continue to benefit the study area’s traffic operations during major events at the Meadowlands Sports Complex, as well as everyday traffic patterns.
