Michael Baker is leading the transformation of Providence Amtrak Station, one of the nation’s busiest rail hubs, through a comprehensive modernization program funded by the Federal Rail Administration and managed in partnership with the Rhode Island Department of Transportation and Amtrak. With over two million annual passengers, the station’s revitalization is designed to enhance capacity, safety and overall customer experience while preserving its iconic architectural character.
The project encompasses a broad range of services, including project management, civil and structural engineering, landscape and interior design, food service planning, public involvement, cost estimating and construction-phase support. Key upgrades feature new police areas, ticketing and baggage facilities, expanded restrooms, improved seating, Amtrak offices and vibrant tenant spaces for a gift shop, café and food service. A thoughtfully designed building addition will seamlessly integrate with the existing station geometry, creating an inviting new café and passenger seating areas.

A hallmark of the project is its innovative approach to construction phasing, ensuring uninterrupted service for Amtrak, MBTA and freight rail users throughout the renovation. The design team’s close collaboration with the Capital Center Commission and use of advanced 3D renderings expedited approvals and contract delivery. Notably, the original rotunda dome, once plagued by acoustical and fire protection challenges, will be transformed with a concealed sprinkler system and dynamic acoustical panels featuring LED lighting, activating the rotunda as a stunning centerpiece. By reimagining passenger pathways, modernizing building systems and elevating safety and comfort, Michael Baker is setting a new standard for rail station excellence in Providence.
