San Diego International Airport Terminal 2 Parking Plaza

Michael Baker served as Civil Design Manager for the design and construction of a public-use parking plaza at the San Diego International Airport. As part of the Swinerton Design-Build Team, Michael Baker was responsible for all civil engineering related to the parking structure site and the realigned access road, including roadway horizontal and vertical geometry, site grading, drainage, utility coordination, water and sewer facilities and pipelines, traffic handling and stage construction.

The new three-story parking plaza can accommodate 2,900 vehicles and includes contemporary parking technologies and code-required handicapped, electric and alternative fuel vehicle spaces. Advanced wayfinding assists drivers in finding available parking and an online payment system, installed and synced with digital camera systems, reads license plates on vehicles entering and exiting the facility, allowing visitors to arrive and depart with ease.

Our design also included an innovative, underground rainwater storage system with a capacity of nearly 100,000 gallons to feed into the airport’s central utility plant (CUP). Previously, the CUP used nearly 30,000 gallons of potable water each day to manage the temperature in the airport terminals. The sustainable stormwater system will capture, treat and reuse nearly two million gallons of rainwater per year to replace some of the potable water previously used by the CUP.
