University of Texas Medical Branch Galveston – Clinical Services Wing 

Michael Baker provided mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) design engineering for the Clinical Services Wing (CSW) Pharmacy at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) Galveston. The pharmacy in the CSW needed extensive upgrades to meet United States Pharmacopeia (USP) 797/800 guidelines so that the pharmacy could continue serving the patients of the UTMB Hospital on Galveston island.

Michael Baker’s upgrades to the pharmacy included IV and hazardous drug (HD) compounding areas, staging areas and ante rooms to meet the more stringent USP 797/800 standards. Our mechanical engineering team re-designed heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems to include air handling unit (AHU) adjustments, along with upgrades to all associated ventilation systems to accommodate the USP code. Electrical systems included the design of both normal power and emergency power circuiting and powering of the lighting systems. Modifications to the plumbing systems by the plumbing design team were based on working within the building’s existing architectural design and included hot and cold water piping, sanitary and appropriate ventilation systems.
