Michael Baker was tasked by Marmon Mok to provide mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) design services for the University of Texas San Antonio Health Science Center to convert an existing dental clinic area into a more advanced special needs ambulatory surgical center (ASC) focusing on advanced needs dentistry, oral medicine and maxillofacial surgery. The centerpiece of the project consisted of converting existing dental clinical research areas into an ambulatory surgical suite for special needs patients with two new operating rooms, requiring a comprehensive renovation of existing medical space.
The project also required the Michael Baker team of experts to repurpose existing operatories for use in a different fashion, working within a concept envisioned by executive leadership at the University of Texas Center for Oral Healthcare to create a single waiting room which serves both standard and ASC operatories within the center.
