MD Anderson’s new Sugar Land Hospital represents a major expansion of cancer care services for Fort Bend County and the greater Houston region. Anticipated to open in 2029, the five-story, 470,000-square-foot facility will become MD Anderson’s largest Houston-area location to date and significantly broaden the clinical offerings currently available in Sugar Land. The project will introduce a new ambulatory surgery center and expand diagnostic imaging, radiation oncology, and outpatient procedural services to better support adult patients with cancer diagnoses and low-to-medium acuity needs. The facility will also feature multidisciplinary clinic space designed to foster seamless, comprehensive care.
Michael Baker is supporting this transformative healthcare project by providing mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP), technology and acoustic engineering services, helping ensure the facility’s systems are high-performing, resilient and aligned with the complex needs of a modern cancer-care environment. Beyond its clinical mission, the new Sugar Land Hospital reflects MD Anderson’s strong commitment to sustainability and patient-centered design.
The building will incorporate strategies to reduce energy consumption, enhance natural daylight, and mitigate glare and heat gain, supporting the organization’s broader environmental goals. Access to nature, outdoor areas and thoughtfully planned interior environments will prioritize comfort, healing and overall experience for both patients and staff.
