The District at South Bay

The District at South Bay is a 157-acre brownfield redevelopment project being constructed on a former landfill that is subject to the oversight of the California Department of Toxic Substances Control. The site will transform the former landfill, commonly known as the Cal Compact Landfill, into a regional retail destination, including 1.83 million square feet for neighborhood commercial, regional commercial (including outlet commercial), recreation/entertainment, restaurant, hotel, and residential development.

Michael Baker serves as the Civil Engineer of Record for the mixed-use development site, responsible for designing and preparing site civil engineering construction documents for the development and providing construction site work, infrastructure improvements and structural foundation systems for future vertical development.

Michael Baker is also the Civil Engineer of Record for the Los Angeles Premium Outlet, a joint venture between Macerich and Simon Property Group proposing to provide 566,000 square-feet of retail space within the District at South Bay plan. The team was responsible for designing and preparing site civil engineering construction documents for the development. Field work will include excavation, waste reconsolidation, installation of landfill gas collection and conveyance piping, soil movement, placement, and grading for landfill cap foundation, structural pile driving, installation of a geosynthetic landfill cap, and soil placement and grading for the finished landfill cap.
